Freshmen on campus as season approaches

NASHVILLE - Soccer season is right around the corner. Just check the calendar featured on the front page of this site. The Commodores open the 2012 season in just 29 days, heading west on I-40 to face Tennessee-Martin on Friday, Aug. 17.

Coach Derek Greene's program currently is wrapping up its summer camp season before getting a short break heading into a fall training schedule that kicks off in the first week of August. In four camp sessions, the Commodores will have hosted nearly 600 youth players as Greene pushes to brand Vanderbilt soccer throughout the region.

One-hundred seventy-five campers took part in this week's Elite Residential Camp, including eight of VU's nine incoming freshmen. Erin Myers of Armonk, N.Y. was named the camp's Most Valuable Player.

The summer camp season wraps up with the High School Team Camp this Saturday through Tuesday. A total of 18 varsity and junior varsity squads, totaling nearly 300 participants, will take part in the four-day camp.
