Sherwood Named SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year

The Austin, Texas, native has been a two-time academic All-American and has made the Dean's List seven times at Vanderbilt

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Vanderbilt senior Cole Sherwood was named the SEC Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year by the league’s coaches on Friday for his work in the classroom and on the course this season.

Sherwood, who was named the 2024 SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year along with Kentucky’s Alex Goff, becomes the third Commodore to win the award since it was established in 2004. He joins Ryan Haselden (2011) and Theo Humphrey (2018) as the only Vanderbilt men’s golfers to win the award.

The Austin, Texas, native, is a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll honoree and was named a Golf Coaches Association of American Academic All-American in each of the last two seasons. Sherwood has been on the Dean’s List seven times during his Vanderbilt tenure, holding a 3.86 cumulative grade point average. He is on track to graduate this May with a degree in Human and Organizational Development.

“I’m really proud of Cole on earning this award,” said Vanderbilt men’s golf head coach Scott Limbaugh. “He represents the program so well. He made the decision to do it all by coming to Vanderbilt and I’m so proud of him and the job he has done. He puts his best foot forward each day, both in the classroom and on the course. Super proud of him.”

Coming into this week’s SEC Championship, Sherwood holds a career scoring average of 70.70 and has played in a total of 40 tournaments for the Commodores. The two-time All-American has collected three individual titles during his collegiate career, with the most recent victory coming at the 2023 Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational. Sherwood has finished inside the top five 13 times at Vanderbilt, while he has posted 16 total top-20 finishes.

Vanderbilt, who earned the No. 3-seed in match play at the 2024 SEC Men’s Golf Championship, will take on No. 6-seed Florida in the quarterfinals this Saturday at 7:20 a.m. CT.
