Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.
We have National Commodore Club members living in 45 states and five countries. Our official membership role for 2012-13 was 6,674, a steadily improving number that we are working to increase. By the way, let's have a little fun. If you know anyone in North Dakota, South Dakota, New Mexico, Idaho or Alaska, get them to join the NCC and let's make it 50 states! We'll try to update you on how this goes.
We had two public events last week and both attracted bigger than usual crowds. Our annual faculty/staff picnic was forced under the stadium concourse due to rain but about 800 braved the elements to hear James Franklin speak. And the high profile Dore Jam was also a big success.
That Oct. 26 Texas A&M football game is appealing to our fans. The alumni relations folks report lots of interest; information on a pregame tailgate for this game and four others is found here. There are also bus trips from Austin and Houston to the game, sponsored by the local alumni chapters.
We are approaching my favorite night of the year - the Hall of Fame Dinner on Sept. 6. The acceptance speeches are memorable, uplifting, sometimes surprising and often emotional. It's the best special event our department hosts all year. You should consider attending to help honor the inductees, support the Hall of Fame and treat yourself by being reminded why you care about the Commodores. A table of eight is $1,500, worth the price. Contact Patricia Marett at 615-343-1107 for details.
That new video board at the soccer/lacrosse stadium is up and running and made a nice addition to the game atmosphere at last Sunday's game with Louisville.
