NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Vanderbilt men's tennis senior Charlie Jones has received his draw for his final collegiate tournament and will face USC's Daniel Nguyen in the first round of the NCAA Division I Men's Singles Championship.
The match is set for Wednesday, May 23, at 5:00 p.m. CT at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The victor will face the winner of a match between UCLA's Adrien Puget and Duke's Henrique Cunha. Cunha is the fifth overall seed in the tournament.
Jones enters the tournament with an ITA singles ranking of 44. He posted a dual match record of 14-9, playing every match at number one singles. Jones is 3-6 against nationally ranked players this year and is coming off a 6-1, 6-3 win over Notre Dame's Casey Watt during Vanderbilt's first round loss in the team championship.
Nguyen is ranked 21st in the latest ITA singles rankings and has helped the top-ranked Trojans into the NCAA Final to be played on Tuesday, May 22. Nguyen took a third-set tiebreaker to clinch the semifinal win over UCLA in his most recent match. He entered the round of 16 with a 22-3 dual match record, playing primarily at number three singles, where he is 17-1.
Jones is in the tournament for the first time. The last Vanderbilt player to participate was Ryan Lipman (2010).
The tournament runs through Monday, May 28.
