Incoming freshman Hunter Stewart ended the U.S. Amateur stroke-play portion of the tournament at one-over par, 143 (70-73), and missed the opportunity to advance to match play by one stroke on Wednesday.
Stewart finished his round on Wednesday morning at Erin Hills with nine straight pars in route to a one-over par, 73. Stewart finished in a tie for 81st for the tournament – the top 64 players advance to match play, which is set to begin later Wednesday afternoon. However, 20 players at even par are currently in a playoff for the final three positions.
Stewart, who begins his Vanderbilt career when he returns from Erin, Wis., the site of the U.S. Amateur, and senior Adam Hofmann each participated in this year’s event. Hofmann finished his stroke play competition at seven-over par, 149 (76-73), on Tuesday.
The Commodores open their regular season Labor Day weekend at world-renown Pebble Beach at the inaugural Carmel Cup on September 3-4.
