March 18, 2012
The Commodores built off of a solid finish to the second round on Saturday to post the third-best round of the day on Sunday in route to a 10th place finish at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga. Vanderbilt shot a 282 on Sunday in the final round and had under-par rounds from all four counting scores. Vanderbilt’s final total for the tournament was 875 (304-289-282), and Adam Hofmann was the team’s best finisher for the weekend. The senior from Pittsburgh posted his second consecutive 69 and jumped 15 places on the individual leaderboard to a tie for 16th place. On Sunday, the Commodores had solid days from all of their counting scores, getting 71’s from Charlie Ewing, Ben Fogler, and Trey DelGreco. Hunter Stewart fired a 76 in the final round at the 6,962-yard Forest Heights Country Club. “We had a good final round today, and finally got off to a good start,” said Vanderbilt head coach Tom Shaw. We came out strong and sustained it. We stumbled a little bit at the end, but still managed to have one of the best rounds of the day. We moved up past a few teams, so it was a good response from our guys. “The final round was a gut check for us, and we responded. I hope we can build on Sunday’s round moving forward. We have the confidence and know we are capable of performing well.”
Alabama led wire-to-wire at the tournament and won with an astounding 47-under par, 817 (268-269-280). The Crimson Tide won the team title by 22 strokes over Virginia. Individually, Virginia’s Ben Kohles won medalist honors with an 18-under par, 198 (65-66-67). Kohles won the individual title by three strokes over Auburn’s Blayne Barber. 10.
