Jelks is the first OL since Wesley Johnson in 2010 to earn All-Freshman honors.
Dec. 12, 2013
Redshirt freshman Andrew Jelks was named to the Southeastern Conference All-SEC Freshman Team on Thursday.
Jelks took over as the Commodores' starting right tackle early in the season at UMass earning eight straight starts. With the Paris, Tenn. native in the lineup the Vanderbilt went 6-2 down the stretch, including wins over Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. He is credited with 26 knockdown blocks on the season and notched 39 blocks that led directly to Commodore first downs or touchdowns.
Jelks becomes the first Commodore offensive lineman to be recognized by the league's coaches on the All-Freshman team since Wesley Johnson in 2010. Earlier this week Johnson was tabbed a first team All-SEC member by the league's coaches.
The Commodores return to action in the team's third straight bowl appearance with a date against Houston on Jan. 4 in the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Ala. To order bowl tickets click here.
