Panarin Named SEC Freshman of the Year

Panarin earns Freshman of the Year, All-Freshman Team, and All-SEC Second Team honors

NASHVILLE, Tenn.— The Southeastern Conference announced men’s tennis postseason awards on Thursday and Vanderbilt’s Danil Panarin was named Freshman of the Year in addition to being named to the All-Freshman Team and All-SEC second team. Panarin becomes the seventh Commodore to have earned All-Freshman Team honors, a group that includes teammate Nathan Cox.

Panarin made his collegiate debut in January, competing at the No. 1 singles position for the majority of the season. He boasts a 14-10 record in singles and amassed 11 doubles victories alongside Joubert Klopper and fellow freshman Hugo Coquelin. His doubles success included defeats over Auburn, Tennessee, South Carolina and LSU.

Notable victories for Panarin this season include a straight-set defeat (6-2, 7-5) over No. 24 Taha Baadi of seventh-ranked Kentucky, a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over No. 43 Tyler Stice of No. 21 Auburn, and another straight-set win over No. 52 Jeremy Jin of No. 25 Florida in singles play.

Vanderbilt awaits the announcement of postseason competition, with the NCAA Tournament selection show scheduled for 5 p.m. CT on Monday. The NCAA will reveal individuals invited to the singles and doubles championships on Tuesday on NCAA.com.
