TERRE HAUTE, Ind - Vanderbilt women's cross country team finished faster and tighter than any previous Commodore group, by placing 13th at the Pre-National Cross Country Invitational today at Indiana State University.
The Vanderbilt men competed in the open race, with Jenner Kizer finishing at 26.33 in the 8,000-meter run.
On the road to the SEC Championships, the top Vandy women ran very well compared to SEC competition from Georgia, Florida, Arkansas, and Alabama.
Florida State came in first in the blue race, scoring 115 points, up from second place in 2009. Arizona came in second (128), with Iowa State placing third (175).
"It was an excellent race for the women. We came in with some high goals and were able to follow through. We showed some real confidence and handled the large fast field as well as I could have hoped," said head coach Steve Keith. "This gives our women a lot of positive momentum going into the championship part of our season,"
Jordan White, a junior, came in at 21:21 just barely edging past teammate Alexa Rogers, also a junior (21.22), followed by senior Rita Jorgensen, (21:30), Louise Hannallah (21:39), Allie Scalf (21:50), and Kristabel Doebel-Hickok (21:53).
"Jordan and Alex ran beautiful races and that helped up front. Rita was out hard, maybe a little too hard, but she held on well and finished strong," said Keith. "Louise moved up nicely throughout the race and gave us a nice #4 score. Allie and Kristabel were not too far behind, giving us a 29 second gap from runners one through five."
In the women's open run, freshman Liz Anderson finished with an impressive seventh overall with 22.02.
In the men's open race, Conrad Goeringer, Alan Ash, David McAdams, Billy Malmed, Joe Newman, Kyle Rewick, and Alex Snowdon all finished under 28 minute mark for the Commodores.
"I was also pleased with the men's overall team effort placing five guys within 28 seconds of each other. They can look forward to an even better effort at SEC in two weeks," said Keith.
Up next for the Commodores is the SEC Championships, Nov. 1 in Columbia, S.C.
