Since its inception 14 years ago, the Great 8 Invitational high school track meet -- which routinely features many of Tennessee's top prep athletes -- has become a highly anticipated annual event at Vanderbilt's track complex.
And this year, the tradition has a new twist.
For the first time in the meetʼs history, the Invitational will include the 4x100m and 4x400m relays, which will add a new element to the meet's already-exciting schedule.
The Invitational -- which begins at 6 p.m. on Tuesday night -- will also include another new feature: Team scoring.
There will be separate competitions for girls and boys, and points will be awarded -- eight points for first place, seven for second, etc. -- for each event.
Vanderbilt head coach Steve Keith said the meet is always entertaining for both the competitors and the spectators.
"You have kids from all the different classifications who don't normally get to compete against each other," said Keith, "so that adds a fun element."
The participating athletes, who have qualified for the meet by posting top times/distances, will be competing on Vanderbiltʼs Mondo track during the one-night event.
There is only one heat/section for each event, and only the best eight performances are accepted into the meet, along with the next three performances as alternates in those events.
"It's always a fun meet," said Keith. "With it being a 'finals-only' (format), it's an elite meet."
Great 8 Meet T-shirts will be presented to all event winners (one per athlete), including relay team members. T-shirts will also be available for purchase.
Admission is $5. Children under the age of 12 will be admitted free.

NOTE: Also new this year is a full-color Digital Meet Program that will be available for spectators and coaches to scan on their Smartphones/iPads.
