BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Making its first road trip of the season, the Vanderbilt track team was in action on Friday night at the UAB Blazer Invite in Birmingham, Ala.

The opening day of the two-day event -- which didn't wrap up until late Friday night -- featured numerous strong performances by the Commodores, including several top-5 finishes.

The list included:

* Courtney Clayton, who finished fifth in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:16.80;

* Sarah Bell, who was fifth in the pole vault by clearing 3.95m;

* Simone Charley, who was fourth in the triple jump (12.22m); and

* Jennifer Cannon, who was fourth in the 60-meter hurdles preliminaries.

Also earning a top-10 finish for Vanderbilt was Skyler Carpenter, who was eighth in the 500-meter dash in a time of 1:17.10. Two other Commodores cracked the top-25 in the same event, with Sarah Goodale finishing 19th at 1:18.84 and Jennifer Cannon 23rd at 1:19.84.

Erin Edmond was 33rd in the 300-meter dash with a time of 40.96. Goodale was 19th in the 60-meter hurdles preliminaries with a time of 9.12.

The second and final day of the event is today.

Vanderbilt is back in action next weekend at the Auburn Invitational, and then returns home to host its second meet in the school's new multi-purpose facility on Jan. 24-25.
