Three top-five finishes highlight split competition
Commodore pole vaulters tie for first on initial day of ISU Classic
Feb. 12, 2010 AMES, Ia. - The Vanderbilt Commodores had an incredibly successful day, including a brand new Vanderbilt indoor record for the pole vault at the ISU Classic in Ames, Ia.
Junior Katherine Hendricks and sophomore Meagan Martin now share the VU record with jumps of 11-11.75. Fittingly, the two Commodores also shared first place in the non-seeded women’s pole vault.
“We had a great day,” assistant coach Clark Humphreys exclaimed. (Kat and Meagan) actually tied for 1st and had a jump off. Two school records were made and all three girls finished in the top five out of 30 competitors.”
Freshman Morgan Toone rounded out the strong Commodore effort at Iowa State, placing fifth with a jump of 11-5.75.
The VU sprinting corps also had a solid day in Iowa. The ‘Dores were led in the 200 Meter Dash by junior Taylor Jackson, who ran a team-fast 25.53. Not far behind was sophomore Anna Carr, who finished in 25.54. “Great strides were made today,” noted Humphreys.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Commodores also found success at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
The VU effort was highlighted by freshman Kristen Findley’s 11th place finish in the mile run final with a time of 5:11.34. Kristabel Doebel-Hickok gave a strong effort for the Commodores, finishing 12th in the 5000 meter run invitational with a time of 17:33.64.
Veteran Rita Jorgensen returned for her first meet of the indoor season, finishing 19th in the mile run invitational with a time of 5:02.49.
Both meets resume tomorrow with the finals of the 60 meter dash and 60 meter hurdles at the ISU Classic, and the 3000 meter run at the Tyson Invitational.
