Clark Humphreys is in his seventh year as a Commodore track and field assistant coach, mentoring field event athletes competing in the pole vault, multi-events and jumps.
Humphreys had three athletes at the First Round of the NCAA National Championships in the 2011 spring season, as high jumper Brionne Williams and vaulters Megan Martin and Katherine Hendricks competed individually. Williams jumped 5'8.75"(1.75m) improving her lifetime personal best and moving to the #2 spot in Vanderbilt history.
Martin and Hendricks each jumped 12'8 (3.86m) at the SEC meet, qualifying for the first round and tying a Vanderbilt outdoor record. They pushed the record up six inches as the two competed back and forth, each owning the record a couple times over the course of the season. Williams qualified for the USA Track & Field Junior National meet, finishing fourth and garnering All-American status.
During the 2010 season, Humphreys coached Buky Bamigboye to the NCAA Championship meet in the heptathlon. In addition to setting a school record in the event, Bamigboye also competed in the long jump and high jump in the first round of the NCAA Championship. Humphreys also coached Katherine Hendricks to both indoor and outdoor school records in the pole vault.
In 2008, Humphreys guided Commodore athletes to SEC scoring performances in the indoor pentathlon, outdoor heptathlon and high jump. Cherice Robertson registered a personal best in the SEC heptathlon in the seventh-place finish. In the high jump, Mallory Hitt produced a collegiate best effort while finishing seventh at the SEC meet. Humphreys also coached Garnetta Holloway to a third-place finish in the 2007 SEC indoor pentathlon and Robertson to seventh place in the same event.
In 2006, Humphreys mentored Holloway and Smith to long jump personal bests in his first year at Vanderbilt. Holloway finished the year with an SEC title in the heptathlon and became just the second Commodore heptathlete to ever compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Humphreys, one of the most decorated prep track and field performers ever in Middle Tennessee, joined Vanderbilt after a two-year stint at Auburn University, and a three year career at South Alabama. As a Tiger assistant, Humphreys mentored 2005 NCAA indoor pentathlon champion Maurice Smith in the pole vault, All-SEC pole-vaulter Ashton Davis, and Auburn women's vault record holder Katie Curtis.
A native of Nashville, Humphreys was an All-American pole-vaulter and NCAA champion at Auburn. Humphreys captured the 1997 NCAA outdoor pole vault title with a clearance of 18'4.5." Humphreys' NCAA mark remains a school record at Auburn. Months before the outdoor national meet, Humphreys also won the SEC indoor vault crown. Humphreys holds the distinction of clearing 18 feet at five different meets during the 1997 season.
During his Auburn career, Humphreys earned three All-American honors and eight All-SEC citations competing in the vault and decathlon. As a prep standout at Brentwood Academy, Humphreys was a two-time state champion in the pole vault and decathlon. He also earned four varsity letters at the school. He continues to hold one of the state's top pole vault achievements, with a best of 16'1.25" that came in the 1994 state decathlon competition.
Humphreys earned a degree at Auburn in 1999. Humphreys and his wife, Erin are the parents of a 6-year-old son, London, and a 3-year-old daughter, Cailey. Humphrey's wife also was an All-American heptathlete at South Carolina.
