VU heads to Disney for Clay Court Invitational
Oct. 23, 2013
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - It is back on the road for the Vanderbilt women's tennis team as it travels to Orlando to play in the 2013 USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational at Disney. The four-day tournament features 50 singles players and 24 doubles teams, in draws of 64 and 32, respectively.
The Clay Court Invitational will be played at both the ESPN Wide World of Sports Tennis Complex and the Grand Cypress Tennis and Racquet Club. Matches on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday will be at Disney/ESPN with Friday's matches played at Grand Cypress.
Sunday's singles and doubles final will be aired live on ESPN3.
Juniors Ashleigh Antal and Marie Casares and sophomores Frances Altick and Georgina Sellyn will represent Vandy in Orlando. Through four tournaments this fall the group is 34-7, including Sellyn's 6-0 run through the Ohio Valley Regional tournament.
"I'll be interested to see how our players adapt to playing on clay," said Vanderbilt head coach Geoff Macdonald. "An important skill in tennis is being able to adjust your game to a different surface. We may be playing outside on slow courts, then it rains so we need to move inside to harder, faster courts. You have to be able to read situations and surfaces and adjust your game accordingly."
Sellyn is one of eight ranked players in the singles draw. The No. 71 player will be the fourth overall seed in the tournament and will receive a first round bye. Altick is ranked in the 9-16 seeds and will also get a bye in the first round.
No. 18 Plaun Burgmans of Auburn is the top-ranked singles player and could potentially face Antal in a second round match.
Casares and Antal will play together in doubles for the first time this fall. The duo went 20-13 last season for the Commodores, including a 9-2 record in tournament play.
Sellyn and Altick will also be paired up for the first time this fall. They will one of the two 3/4 seeds and will receive a first round bye. The sophomores went 16-11 last season and played out of the No. 3 doubles position in dual play.
