Flushing, N.Y. - Recent Vanderbilt graduate and women’s tennis student-athlete, Sydney Campbell, will take the court tomorrow to begin her last tournament while donning the Vanderbilt uniform.
Campbell, a three-time All-American out of Franklin, Tenn., will compete tomorrow at approximately 1:00 p.m. in the American Collegiate Invitational, which takes place at the US Open from Sept. 7-9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
“I’m so excited to get to compete again, especially for Vanderbilt,” said Campbell. “I don’t know much about my opponent, Alexa Graham, but I know she’s very talented player and I’m looking forward to a competitive match.”
Campbell, who capped her career as Vanderbilt’s first NCAA singles tournament semifinalist, will face off against North Carolina sophomore Alexa Graham on court four. Graham finished the 2017 season with a 36-6 overall singles record, ranked No. 78 in the country and on the ACC’s third team.
While Campbell has begun her professional life in the field of realty, the 2017 Ohio Valley Regional Senior Player of the Year and Southeastern Conference Tournament MVP, has been hard at work preparing for her final Commodore bow.
“It’s been fun to get back into training in preparation for this tournament,” Campbell continued. “Vanderbilt has helped me a lot and given me tons of support, so I feel ready to go.”
The American Collegiate Invitational, open only to American college players, began in 2014 as a way to spotlight college tennis during the US Open. Eight men and eight women play single-elimination singles tournaments Thursday to Saturday during the second week of the US Open with the winners receiving a wild card into the 2018 US Open main draw or qualifying, depending on their ranking next summer.
American Collegiate Invitational will also serve as a testing ground for several innovations, including utilizing a 25-second serve clock between points and eliminating coaching violations, allowing players to communicate with coaches between points.
Live scoring can be followed on USOpen.org and available through the US Open app.
