NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Former Vanderbilt women's tennis standout Catherine Newman will be recognized at the start of the U.S. Open this weekend for receiving the 2010 Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship.
Newman, along with the nine other national winners, will be honored at the ITA awards luncheon, hosted by the USTA in the President's Dinning Room Suite.
"This is a great honor for her," Vanderbilt women's tennis head coach Geoff McDonald said. "She had an incredible four-year career here she's probably the finest student athlete I've ever been privileged to coach and I'm glad she's getting this international recognition for her sportsmanship and character."
Earlier in May, Newman was selected as the Ohio Valley Region's recipient of the award before beating out the other 12 national semifinalists in Division I to win the national award.
Newman is beginning graduate school at Stanford University this fall and will work towards a master's degree in engineering.
