GRAZ, Austria – Astra Sharma of the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team earned her second International Tennis Federation singles title in a three-week span and third title overall, winning the Graz $15,000 in Graz, Austria.
On July 30th, the redshirt-senior earned her first singles championship of the summer in Romania, defeating Florida’s Belinda Woolcock 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 in Targu Ju, Romania.
To advance to the tournament finale, the Perth, Australia native defeated the draw’s top seed, No. 391 Gabriela Pantuckova, in quarterfinal action. Astra’s Czech opponent nearly forced a third set, however the Commodore advanced on a 7-6(2), 7-6(2) victory. In semifinals, again the reigning 2017 SEC Player of the Year was considered the underdog against third-seeded Magdalena Pantuckova. Like her sister, Pantuckova was knocked out of tournament contention by Sharma, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
On Sunday morning, Sharma faced 20-year old Vendula Zovincova for the title. Sharma dropped her opening set, 2-6, but quickly turned her game around to force a third set, 6-3, and take the match; 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Commodore plans to reunite with Vanderbilt alum Frances Altick in Romania, as the duo will continue ITF tournament play.
