STANFORD, Calif. - The Vanderbilt women's tennis team will play in the Sweet 16 for the 13th time in program history this afternoon as it faces no. 4 North Carolina at 5 p.m. CT at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Center.
The Commodores (17-8) advanced to the championship site with wins over Winthrop and Tennessee in the Knoxville Regional last weekend. The Tar Heels (25-5) defeated East Tennessee State and Washington in the Chapel Hill Regional en route to advancing to the Sweet 16.
The last time Vanderbilt faced UNC was in the 2005 Sweet 16, when the Tar Heel's came away with a 4-0 victory. That match was also played on Stanford's campus.
This is Vanderbilt's 12th Sweet 16 in the past 14 years, missing just 2009 and 2010 since 1998. The Commodores best finish at the NCAA Championships came in 2001, when they fell to Stanford in the title match.
Carolina's Zoe De Bruycker leads the team with a 15-12 record at the No. 1 singles position. In doubles, the duo of Shinann Featherston and Lauren McHale entered the post-season with a 13-3 record in dual matches, and a 25-8 record since the fall.
After Vanderbilt's run in the team tournament, the duo of Alex Leatu and Rachael Dillon will continue their stay in Stanford for the NCAA Doubles Tournament. The duo, ranked 36th in the nation, holds a 19-12 record together, including a 9-11 mark at the No. 1 position in dual matches.
