WT: Newman, Wu earn NCAA selection

INDIANAPOLIS - Vanderbilt's women's tennis players Catherine Newman and Jackie Wu have been selected to play in the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Singles Championship later this month. The Commodores 33rd-ranked doubles team of Chelsea Preeg and Wu were named alternates to the doubles championship.

The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 26-31 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., following the conclusion of the team championship (May 20-25). The University of Georgia will serve as the host for both.

All matches shall be the best of three sets and regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six games all will be used for all matches.



Wu is making her second straight NCAA singles appearance after posting an overall record of 23-5. The Holmdel, N.J. native won 10 of her 12 matches during the dual season and went 5-1 in the Southeastern Conference. In conference play Wu was 2-0 at the No. 3 position and 3-1 at the No. 2 spot. The sophomore defeated four ranked opponents during the course of the year, including a straight set win over then-No. 6 Caitlin Whoriskey of Tennessee at the ITA Kick-Off weekend in January. Wu is ranked 32nd-nationally according to the ITA's latest singles rankings.

Newman was selected to her third NCAA singles championship after registering an impressive regular season where she earned first-team All-SEC and SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year honors. The Greensboro, N.C., native is 26-13 in singles this year (fall and spring) and has a dual record of 14-7. Ranked 23rd-nationally, Newman is one of only a few players in Vanderbilt school history to have at least 100 career wins in singles and to have earned All-SEC honors all four years. Newman won a team-best 13 matches against ranked opponents this year. Following graduation and competition, Newman will pursue a master's degree in engineering at Stanford University.

Vanderbilt's No. 1 doubles tandem of Preeg and Wu earned an alternate selection to the 32-team doubles championship after going a combined 27-9 during the fall and spring season. The sophomore duo posted a 10-5 mark in dual play, including a 4-3 record in the SEC. Preeg and Wu are listed as the No. 8 alternate.

Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championships will be awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125 for eligible/entered singles players. For conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA Top 125 eligible/entered singles players, the subcommittee will apply the NCAA selection criteria to determine which student-athlete is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All singles players must have a record of a minimum of 13 completed singles matches in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.

Automatic qualification into the Division I doubles championships will be awarded to any conference with one or more eligible doubles teams ranked in the ITA Top 60 for eligible/entered doubles teams. For conferences with more than one doubles team within the ITA Top 60 eligible/entered doubles teams, the subcommittee will apply the NCAA selection criteria to determine which doubles team is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All doubles teams must have a record of a minimum of 10 completed doubles matches in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
