Dores close SEC play at No. 11 Florida, No. 35 South Carolina

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The fifth-ranked Vanderbilt women's tennis team will close the regular season on the road this weekend with matches at No. 11 Florida on Friday (4 p.m.) and No. 35 South Carolina (12:30 p.m.) on Sunday.

Vanderbilt (17-4, 10-1 SEC) enter this weekend's action in a three-way tie for first with Georgia and Kentucky. Sitting all alone in second place is Florida at 9-2. The Commodores come into the week as the highest ranked SEC team in the ITA rankings at No. 5. Vandy sits just ahead of Georgia (No. 8), Alabama (No. 9) and Texas A&M (No. 10).

The Commodores are coming off a perfect 5-0 home stand, in which they handed both Georgia and Alabama their first losses of the season in back-to-back matches. Vanderbilt has won seven-straight matches and 14 of its last 15 dating back to February 15.

Vandy heads into Gainesville on Friday with five ranked singles players and five ranked doubles teams. Leading the `Dores in the rankings is Frances Altick at No. 62. Just behind Altick is Sydney Campbell at No. 67 and Georgina Sellyn at No. 70.

Four Commodores have eclipsed the 20-win mark this season led by junior Marie Casares who has posted an overall mark of 29-4. Casares remains on her nations-best 21-match win streak despite her last two matches going unfinished. Also in the 20-win club is Altick at 26-6, Sellyn at 24-15 and Ashleigh Antal at 23-9.

Florida (17-4, 9-2 SEC) will be looking to extend its 129-straight home win streak against the fifth-ranked Dores. The Gators have six ranked players going in Friday evenings match, three of which are ranked in the top 30.

 

 

South Carolina (14-8, 5-6 SEC) will take on Kentucky on Friday prior to its match with the Commodores on Sunday. The Gamecocks after starting the SEC season 1-6 have put together a string of four-straight wins against LSU, Arkansas, Ole Miss and Mississippi State. SC will honor its seniors prior to Sunday's match.
