NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Vanderbilt's women's tennis team opens up the 2009 SEC season Friday as they play host to South Carolina Friday at 2:30 the Currey Tennis Center. The `Dores will be looking for their third win in their last four meetings with USC after falling 4-3 to the Gamecocks last season in Columbia, S.C. Vanderbilt leads the all-time series with the Gamecocks 14-11.
The Commodores (3-1) last competition came on Feb. 21 as they handed Yale a 6-1 loss in Nashville. Against the defending Ivy league champions, Jackie Wu, Keilly Ulery, Chelsea Preeg, Courtney Ulery and Heather Steinbauer posted singles wins after the `Dores captured the doubles point, winning all three matches.
Individually, VU has three players ranked in the latest ITA single poll. Junior Catherine Newman is ranked as the No. 50 singles player in country while Wu is 52nd and Keilly Ulery is 90th.
The freshman duo of Preeg and Wu lead the team in singles with 17 wins a piece while Newman has 14 victories.
USC is coming off 5-2 setback to Clemson on Feb. 22, dropping their record to 5-3 this spring. The 29th-ranked Gamecocks are led by senior Gira Schofield and junior Ana Marija Zubori. Schofield is ranked No. 33 in singles while Zubori is 49th.
With the weather predicted to be in the low 70s Friday, the team's will attempt to play on the outside courts of the Currey Tennis Center. If the weather holds true it will be the Commodores first outdoor match of the 2009 campaign.
