Behind the V: Lauren Mira

Jan. 22, 2014

Lauren Mira is a senior from Baton Rouge, La., and a member of the Vanderbilt women's tennis team. She is currently ranked No. 61 in singles and No. 36 in doubles by the ITA.

Last concert attended?
The last concert I attended was the CMA Music Festival held in the beginning of June. It was the best concert experience of my life and I would go every year if I could.

Favorite movie?
Miracle. I watched it every day during a national tournament when I was 15 and I ended up winning the tournament and it was my first national title. I was superstitious so I became obsessed with the movie and constantly watched it throughout my junior career. Now I can quote the movie line for line.

Name a guilty pleasure.
My guilty pleasure is definitely listening to Christmas music all year long. My teammates hate that I do it.

What motivates you?
I stay motivated by reminding myself of all the sacrifices my mom and I made during my middle and high school years to develop my tennis game. I wouldn't be here today if it weren't for those sacrifices.

If you weren't in sports, what would you be doing?
I'd probably be playing the piano because I played for four years before I picked up tennis.

First websites you visit every morning?
Facebook and Pinterest. Unhealthy obsessions.

Favorite author?
Sidney Sheldon. I've read many of his books and they are page turners.

If you had a time machine, what year would you travel to?
I would love to travel back to the 1980s. The pop culture is really appealing to me and I have a love for the movies that were produced during that decade, so it'd be fun to be a part of that craze. I feel like the fashion back then was pretty out there, so that'd be fun to be a part of as well

Name one of your talents outside of sports?
I can sing pretty well, but if you ask me to sing for you, I become super resistant.

Do you have pets?
I have two Shih Tzu's that I am obsessed with. Their names are Leyla and Coco.

If you could have dinner with three people, who would you choose?
My grandfather (on mother's side) because he was an extremely influential politician in the Philippines and impacted many people's lives. I never got to meet him. He was extremely selfless towards the poorer communities in the Philippines and it'd be an honor to have met him. Justin Timberlake, just because I am absolutely obsessed with him and his music, and Serena Williams because she is my ultimate tennis idol. This would be a really weird dinner with all three of them together, but it'd be fun for me!

What will you be doing 10 years from now?
In 10 years, I hope to be happily married and maybe even have a child. I want to be successful in whatever occupation I have, settled somewhere in the South. I never want to leave the South.

How do you want to be remembered?
I want to be remembered by my friends and family as a caring and kind person that impacted their lives in some way. I also want to leave some sort of tennis legacy here at Vanderbilt in addition to one back at home at the tennis program where I trained.
