NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis will open its 2010 dual season this weekend as it travels west to the Rocky Mountains to face Colorado and Denver. The Commodores will play the Buffaloes in Boulder, Colo., at 11 a.m., on Saturday before making the drive to the capitol to play the Pioneers at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
It marks the first time in Geoff Macondald’s 16-year career that the Commodores will play in the state of Colorado.
VU is coming off an impressive outing at the Northwestern Wildcat Invitational where they went 8-5 in doubles and 7-7 in singles while competing against No. 2 Northwestern and No. 45 DePaul. The sophomore duo of Chelsea Preeg and Jackie Wu were named the Invitational doubles champion after posting a 3-0 record in Evanston.
The Commodores have four players ranked in the latest ITA top-100 singles poll, led by Wu at No. 29. Senior Catherine Newman is ranked 31st while Preeg and Heather Steinbauer are ranked 32nd and 97th.
VU also has a pair of doubles tandems in the top-40 with Steinbauer and Erica Robertson (No. 25); along with Preeg and Wu at No. 40.
Colorado (1-0) is fresh off a 6-1 victory over Air Force last Saturday where it took five of the six singles matches after sweeping the doubles point from the Falcons. The Buffs have two players ranked in singles; Melisa Esposito (No. 64) and Monica Milewski (No. 90). Colorado is led in doubles by the 44th-ranked pair of Michala Hedelund Jensen and Milewski.
Denver (0-0) will host Colorado State in their season opener on Friday night before hosting the Commodores on Sunday. The Pioneers are coming off a strong 2009 season where they finished 16-6 after a first-round exit in the NCAA Tournament. Denver finished second in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
