NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The No. 16 Vanderbilt women's tennis team opens its spring dual match season on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. as it hosts the UT-Martin Skyhawks at the Currey Tennis Center.
"We're excited about our first home match," head coach Geoff Macdonald said. "Obviously, the first dual match of any season is what you're looking forward to when you work really hard in the offseason. I'm proud of the way the girls worked through the fall and winter."
The Commodores finished last season with a 19-9 record and a No. 16 national ranking after falling to Stanford in the NCAA round of 16. It marked the 10th consecutive year that the `Dores had made the NCAA round of 16.
The Commodores placed three players in the preseason ITA women's singles poll, released last week. Junior Courtney Ulery opens the season ranked 13th after compiling a 13-0 record in the fall season. Sophomore Catherine Newman, who was first-team All-SEC in 2007, opens the spring with her highest career ranking, coming in at No. 24. Two-time All-SEC performer Amanda Taylor is ranked 34th nationally in singles.
UT-Martin enters this season after finishing last year with a 12-6 overall record and an 8-4 Ohio Valley Conference record. The Skyhawks are led by senior Mary Beth Gunn, who earned All-OVC honors last season. Dennis Taylor is in his 21st year as head coach of the Skyhawks. During his tenure, the Skyhawks have won three Ohio Valley Conference Championships and a NCAA Division II National Championship.
After facing the Skyhawks on Wednesday, Vanderbilt travels to Albuquerque, N.M., for matches against New Mexico on Friday and Colorado on Sunday.
