Vandy finishes tourney with five wins

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Vanderbilt women’s tennis wrapped up the Memphis Invitational on Sunday with five wins in singles matches.
The Commodores finished the tournament on a positive note as all five players who were in action came away with singles victories.
For the tournament, Antal, Casares and Colton all went 2-1 in singles play. Leavell finished singles action 1-2 and Megan Gornet went 2-0, but did not play on Sunday.
In doubles action, Vanderbilt took on Ole Miss, Purdue, Oklahoma and Memphis in the last two days.
Antal and Casares won all three of their doubles matches. On Saturday, the Vandy duo defeated Verboven and Milutinovic of Ole Miss, 8-4, and then ended the night with a win over Oklahoma’s Lancaster and Engbrooks, 8-5.
On Sunday, Antal and Casares finished their doubles play with a win over Memphis’ Kuykendall and Tymchenko, 8-5.
The doubles team of Colton and Lauren Mira won one of their three matches. They defeated Purdue’s Schmidt and Kapitany, 8-3 before dropping their final two matches to Oklahoma (Ritchie/Brhane) and Memphis (Mikesz/Wegner) 8-3 and 8-6, respectively.
Gornet and Leavell fell in a tough match to Ole Miss’ Keating and Robbins on Saturday, 9-8, before bouncing back to beat Oklahoma’s Wofford and Melrose, 9-7. The two Commodores then dropped their final doubles match to Welcher and Gray of Memphis, 8-1.
Vanderbilt begins the spring season in Coral Gables, Fla., for the Miami Invitational Jan. 18-20.
