Vandy shines on first day of Furman Classic
Sept. 27, 2013
GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Vanderbilt women's tennis team opened its 2013 fall season in impressive fashion Friday, advancing all seven singles players to the second day of competition. The Commodores will also have two doubles teams playing for flight championships, Saturday morning.
"It was a really solid day for us," said VU head coach Geoff Macdonald. "Today was a great start to the season. I was very pleased with our younger players and impressed with the leadership of our veterans."
Vandy won every set in during Friday's singles action, and will play its semifinal match-ups Saturday morning.
"It is so hard to singles out one individual from today," said Macdonald. "Everyone played so well, our goal looking ahead to continue playing well and get everyone into Sunday's singles finals."
"Ashleigh and Sydney played fantastic doubles today," Macdonald exclaimed. "They did not look like a team who was playing together for the first time. I was very pleased with their performance."
Campbell and Antal won their first and second round doubles pro-sets in convincing fashion. In the first round the duo knocked off Gumulya and Eidukonyte of Clemson, 8-0, then they defeated Pande and Olivarez of Tennessee, 8-2.
They will now play Speilmann and Zabor of Alabama in the Flight two championship Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m.
