Sept. 26, 2009
GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team recorded six singles wins and went a combined 2-2 in doubles play to conclude the first day of the Furman Fall Classic in Greenville, S.C. Due to rain scheduled for Saturday, the tournament format was modified so each player competing in the event played two singles matches and one doubles match Friday.
Vanderbilt’s Jackie Wu and Chelsea Preeg led the Commodores in Greenville Friday as they both went 2-0 in singles play to advance to the finals of their respected draws. Wu, who is competing in the second flight, posted straight set wins over Lauren Kline of Furman and 34th-ranked Katrina Tsang of North Carolina. The Holmdel, N.J., native will now face Tennessee’s Maria Sorbello in the second flight final.
Preeg pushed her fall record to a perfect 5-0 Friday with consecutive set wins over Mattie Saari-Bystrom (USC) and 84th-ranked Natalie Pluskota (Tennessee). The sophomore from Naples, Fla., will meet Florida State’s Francesca Segareli in the championship match of her draw.
Keilly Ulery improved her fall record to 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Furman’s Michele Stanford while VU’s Erica Robertson took down Brooke Mosteller of Furman in straight sets, winning 6-1, 6-2. Robertson’s two singles matches Friday marked the first time she has competed in a tournament or dual match since the beginning of February last season.
On the doubles side, Vanderbilt’s team of Preeg and Wu picked up an impressive 8-2 win over Northwestern’s Stacey Lee and Lauren Lui. Preeg and Wu are now 3-1 in doubles action this fall. Hannah Blatt and Megan Gornet registered the other Vanderbilt doubles win Friday as they edged Florida State’s duo of Francesca Segareli and Bonny Davidson 9-7.
A recap and results of Saturday’s action from the Furman Fall Classic will be posted on vucommodores.com following the day’s events.
