Wolverines shut down Commodores
Feb. 10, 2013 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 21 Vanderbilt finished the 2013 ITA National Team Indoor Championship without a win after falling to No. 16 Michigan, 4-2, Sunday evening hosted by the University of Virginia at the Boar’s Head The Commodores, which fell to 4-3, lost all three matches this weekend to top 20 teams in the country. Even though Vanderbilt left without a win, the Commodores have a bright future ahead, as they performed against some of the best competition in the country. Michigan started out of the gates quickly winning the doubles point on courts No. 1 and No. 2. The Wolverines duo No. 21 Emina Bektas and Brooke Bolender defeated Courtney Colton and Lauren Mira, 8-2. In the No. 2 doubles, Sarah Lee and Ronit Yurovsky received a tough match from Ashleigh Antal and Marie Casares, but the Michigan duo made enough plays to win, 8-7. Vanderbilt would fall behind 3-0 with losses in No. 4 (Lee over Casares, 6-0, 6-3) and No. 3 singles (Bolender over Sellyn, 6-2, 6-2), but the Commodores would not go down without a fight. Altick and Antal recorded wins for Vanderbilt at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions to pull within a point, 3-2. Antal defeated Amy Zhu in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, while Altick knocked off Kristen Dodge, 6-3, 6-4. The Commodores’ comeback would be halted as (Emina) Bektas clinched the win for Michigan in No. 1 singles. Bektas was able to hold off a strong effort by Colton, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Vanderbilt heads to Texas for a two-match road trip Feb. 16-17. The Commodores will play No. 15 Baylor Feb. 16 in Waco and then No. 38 TCU in Fort Worth Feb. 17.
