    VU picks up four wins on day one

    Day One Results Get Acrobat Reader

    CORAL GABLES, Fla. – No. 26 Vanderbilt recorded four total wins on Friday, the first day of competition at the Miami Invitational. Vanderbilt competed against No. 9 Miami in singles and No. 14 Texas A&M in doubles.

    The Commodores came away with three wins in singles play and one win in doubles action. Miami is currently in first with 32 total points.

    “Today was great match experience for us,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “I thought we competed well and we will look to play even better tomorrow.”

    In singles, No. 91 Marie Casares needed three sets to defeat Miami’s Melissa Bolivar, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Lauren Mira defeated No. 92 Stephanie Wagner, 7-6, 6-3, while Ashleigh Antal registered a win versus Deborah Suarez, 6-3, 6-2.

    No. 57 Lina Lileikite recorded a win over No. 102 Courtney Colton, 6-0, 6-2, while No. 51 Kelsey Laurente defeated No. 115 Frances Altick, 6-4, 7-6. Georgina Sellyn fell to Clementina Riobueno, 7-6, 6-0.

    The lone doubles victory came from the duo of Mira and Sellyn against Texas A&M’s Wen Sun and Cristina Sanchez-Qui, 8-6. Mira and Sellyn teamed up for the first time this season as doubles partners.

    Antal and Colton had the tough task of facing the seventh-ranked doubles team of Stefania Hristov and Cristina Stancu. Antal and Colton made it tough of on the Aggie duo, but fell in the end, 8-5.

    Altick and Casares were defeated in the final doubles match by Maria Ines Deheza and Maria Paula Deheza, 8-2.

    Play resumes at 8 a.m. CT on Saturday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Vanderbilt will face Miami in doubles, followed by Texas in singles.
