NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Vanderbilt swim team is back on the road with the weeks winding down to the SEC Championships. The Commodores will head to Bowling Green, Ky., for a quad meet hosted by Western Kentucky, featuring Marshall and the University of the Cumberlands. Action gets underway at 5 p.m., Friday, and continues at noon on Saturday.
Vanderbilt is coming off its final home meet of the season, splitting against Liberty and West Florida.
The 'Dores fell to Liberty, 140-121, but closed the gap from its 154-104 loss earlier in the season. Junior Chrissy Oberg had two of the six first-place finishes for VU, taking the top spot in both the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes. Elly Faulkner, Alex Blankenburg, Hannah Martin and Carrie Bencic each picked up the remaining top finishes for the 'Dores.
Western Kentucky features some of the fastest swimmers in Conference USA. The Hilltoppers are led by juniors Allie Duff and Claire Conlon. Duff has posted NCAA "B" standard times in both the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes. Conlon has also posted B cuts, with her conference best times in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes.
With just under a month until SECs the 'Dores currently have 21 times in 11 events in the top 50 of the conference. Faulkner sits in the top 35 in four different events, with her 100 breast time of 1:01.71 putting her at 15th in the conference.
Following the quad meet the 'Dores will face Arkansas-Little Rock and Arkansas on back-to-back days on January 31 and February 1.
