BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After a thrilling 5-3 come from behind win Friday night against Missouri, Olivia Simmons was named Freshman of the Week by the conference Monday afternoon. Simmons earned her second freshman of the week honor this season.
The Dores fell behind early after conceding the opening goal in the 11th minute but they would not be down for long. Simone Charley got the play started with a run up the right side and sent a cross in towards the six-meter box. Simmons positioned herself well past the defender, got her foot on the ball and sent it in the back of the net for the goal.
After the Commodores regained the lead in the second half, Simmons would add an insurance goal in the 81st minute. She ended up in a 1-v-1 situation with the keeper, kept the shot low and scored her second goal of the game to put the Dores up 5-3.
Simmons is tied for the team lead in goals after Friday night’s performance. She is the first freshman to score multiple goals against an SEC opponent since Cheyna Williams scored twice against Arkansas on Oct. 5, 2012.
Simmons and the Commodores will be back in action this Thursday. They will head north next Thursday to face Kentucky with the match set for a 6:30 pm CT start on the SEC Network +.
