Soccer in Brazil: Day One
May 12, 2013
Vanderbilt landed in Rio de Janeiro around 8:30 a.m. local time (6:30 back in Nashville) after a 10+ hour flight. The group mets its tour guides for the week and were off to their hotel right on Copacabana Beach. The group of 35 players, coaches and support staff then had orientation and lunch before heading out for short walk over to Ipanema Beach (team picture above), where everyone relaxed by the ocean for a few hours.
The Commodores have early dinner plans tonight and then will look to catch up on the sleep they may have missed on last night's red-eye. "Work" begins tomorrow, as the Commodores have a morning training session scheduled.
The five graduated seniors from the 2012 squad are all here in Brazil, having graduated less than 48 hours before landing in Rio. Since teams are only allowed to travel once every four years, one class often gets skipped since trips usually occur in the summer. But with Vanderbilt's trip coming on the heels of Commencement, the entire group was able to make it. Dana Schwartz and Amanda Essay send a quick note home below.
