STARKVILLE, Miss. --- Amy Baumann continued her torrid offensive streak with another goal and the Vanderbilt defense recorded its ninth shutout of the year in a 4-0 win over Mississippi State in SEC soccer action Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.
The Commodores improved to 10-3-5 overall and 6-2-2 in SEC action with the win, while Mississippi State fell to 2-15 and 1-9 in conference play. The win, coupled with Tennessee's 2-1 overtime loss to Auburn, moves VU into second place overall in the SEC.
Baumann's goal, her third of the weekend and her sixth in the last five games, came at the 34 minute mark from 20 yards out to give Vandy a 1-0 lead.
Nicole Lukens came through with her fourth goal of the year six minutes later from 15 feet away to give the Commodores a 2-0 halftime lead.
Katie Schulz got in on the action with her first goal of the season off of assists from Abby Jones and Baumann to make it 3-0 at the 67:10 mark.
Sarah Dennis then closed out the scoring with her second goal of the year off an assist from Meredith Kohn at the 73:47 mark.
The Commodores held a dominating 17-4 shot advantage in the game with goalkeeper Tyler Griffin only facing one shot on goal the entire contest.
It was Griffin's eighth shutout of the season and second of the weekend.
The win gave the team 10 for the year, marking the first time they have recorded back to back double digit victory seasons since the 1997-98 campaigns.
Vanderbilt will close out the regular season on Friday at Kentucky at 7:30 p.m. ET. A win would clinch second place overall in the SEC heading into the conference tournament in two weeks.
