BOWLING GREEN, Ky. --Nicole Lukens goal with a minute left in the first half was the lone goal of an exhibition match as Vanderbilt defeated Western Kentucky 1-0 Saturday night at the WKU Soccer Complex.

Lukens scored her goal at the 43:59 mark off of assists from Megan Kinsella and Chelsea Stewart.

"Overall, I was pleased with our team's effort and it was nice to pick up the win against a good team like Western Kentucky," said Vanderbilt head coach Ronnie Woodard. "We had a tough time getting the ball in the back of the net but give Western Kentucky credit."

Goalkeepers Rachel Bachtel and Jessica Amlaw combined on the shutout, facing just one shot on goal the entire contest.

VU had a 10-5 shot advantage with six on goal. Dana Schwartz had two shots on goal while Lukens, Megan Forester, Molly Kinsella and Emily Grant had one each in the win.

"I thought tonight's game was a learning experience for our team," Woodard added. "I think as coaches and players we still have some work to do and now is a good time in the season to fine tune a few things."

The Commodores will open the regular season next Saturday against Saint Louis at 7 p.m. at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. Tickets (adults- $5; youth- $3) are available the day of the game at the entrance gate.

"Hopefully our team can build off this game and have a good week of practice before we host Saint Louis," added Woodard.
