NASHVILLE -- Nine student-athletes will enroll at Vanderbilt next fall and join the Commodore lacrosse team for the 2012-13 season, Head Coach Cathy Swezey announced Thursday during the early signing period. The impressive group features young women from Florida, Georgia, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and Massachusetts.

    The incoming class includes:

    • Kelly Chandler (Midfield; Salisbury, Md.; Episcopal)
    • Emma Dagres (Midfield; Weston, Mass.; Weston)
    • Ashlin Dolan (Midfield; Morristown, N.J.; Groton [Mass.])
    • Alexa Kunowsky (Attack; Severna Park, Md.; Severn)
    • Amanda Lockwood (Midfield; Alpharetta, Ga.; Milton)
    • Mallory Schonk (Attack; Perry Hall, Md.; McDonogh)
    • Mackenzie Smith (Attack; Vero Beach, Fla.; Vero Beach)
    • Annie Vreeland (Midfield; Short Hill, N.J.; Pingry)
    • Sarah Wilcox (Defense; Alexandria, Va.; St. Stephens-St Agnes)
"We are very excited about our signees this fall," Swezey said. "It is an extremely talented group that I would rate with the best classes we have recruited to Vanderbilt."

The accomplished class includes three attackers, five midfielders and one defender, and features Academic All-Americans and state champions. Lockwood and Smith represent Vanderbilt's first signees from the states of Georgia and Florida, respectively.

"These girls are great competitors, as they have all played for championships," Swezey said. "Their talent is highlighted by their exceptional speed and athleticism, but they also are a skilled group with great team-playing tendencies. We are pleased by the geographic diversity, spanning the east coast from Massachusetts to Florida. We could not be more thrilled by their commitment to play for Vanderbilt Lacrosse."

Complete bios on all nine members of the incoming class will be posted to vucommodores.com over the next few weeks.

The Vanderbilt Commodores have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in four of the last five years. After closing their fall schedule at the end of October, Coach Swezey's 2012 Commodores are scheduled to open spring practice on Jan. 19. The season begins on Saturday, Feb. 11, when Duke visits the VU Lacrosse Complex (1 p.m. CT).
