April 27, 2014
In order to keep its season alive, the Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team will have to upset the defending American Lacrosse Conference Tournament champ – on its home field.
On Saturday, after the regular season concluded, the Commodores learned they will be the No. 6 seed in the upcoming ALC Tournament. They open play at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday against No. 3 seed and host Northwestern in Evanston, Ill.
Vanderbilt (5-11) is looking to advance in the ALC Tournament for the first time in four years. Northwestern (10-5), ranked fifth nationally, has reached the tournament championship game all seven years of the tournament’s existence – and won the title six times.
The teams met less than three weeks ago at Northwestern. The Wildcats prevailed with a 15-9 victory, though the Commodores tied the game twice early and trailed by three goals early in the second half. Vanderbilt has lost 13 straight to Northwestern, last winning in 2004.
Florida, ranked third in the country and the regular-season conference champ, earned the top seed and earned a bye. The Gators will play the winner of No. 2 seed Ohio State/No. 7 Michigan. The Vanderbilt/Northwestern winner will play the victor of the matchup between No. 4 Penn State/No. 5 Johns Hopkins. The tournament begins Thursday, continues Friday and concludes with the championship on Sunday. All games can be seen on the Big Ten Digital Network.
The winner of the ALC Tournament receives the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. This will be the last tournament for the ALC, which is dissolving after this season.
