Wheeler named ALC Player to Watch

Senior captain Abby Wheeler has been named an American Lacrosse Conference Player to Watch.

Feb. 12, 2014

Abby Wheeler entered her senior season at Vanderbilt as the team's top returning scorer.

Therefore, it is easy to see why she has been pegged as someone to watch.

After scoring 28 goals last year, Wheeler has been tabbed as an American Lacrosse Conference Player to Watch, as voted upon by league coaches. The ALC announced 12 players to watch on Wednesday along with the preseason coaches poll.

Vanderbilt received 15 votes and was picked to finish sixth in the ALC - one spot ahead of league newcomer Michigan. Northwestern, the reigning ALC Tournament champ, was tabbed to win the league and received six first-place votes. Penn State, which shared the regular-season crown with Northwestern and Florida, earned one first-place vote and was projected to finish second. Florida, Johns Hopkins and Ohio State rounded out the top five.

Wheeler, a senior captain from Charlottesville, Va., was second on the team last year with 28 goals - finishing behind then-senior and All-ALC selection Carly Linthicum (49 goals). Wheeler also had 15 ground balls, 11 draw controls and four assists.

Through two games this season, she has two goals and one assist. In the season opener at Kennesaw State on Friday, she scored two goals in a 20-5 rout.

Vanderbilt (1-1) returns to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday when it hosts Liberty (0-1) at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex.
