CLINTON, S.C. - The Vanderbilt women's lacrosse team opens it 2011 season on the road Saturday, traveling to face Presbyterian College on Saturday, Feb. 12, at Noon CT at Old Bailey Stadium.
The preseason Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll was released on Thursday, with the Commodores garnering a No. 11 ranking. Head Coach Cathy Swezey's squad has earned four consecutive NCAA Tournament berths.
Senior Katherine Denkler and junior All-American Ally Carey lead a talented group into the 2011 season. The pair combined to score 83 goals a year ago, and lead an offensive group that returns 59 percent of its goals from a season ago.
Defensively, the Commodores are anchored by junior goalkeeper Natalie Wills, a two-year starter. Wills has made 294 saves in 31 career starts entering her third season at Vanderbilt.
The Presbyterian Blue Hose graduated their top two scorers from a 2010 squad that ended the year with a 20-8 victory over Howard in the National Lacrosse Conference Tournament. The Commodores will be the highest ranked team that Head Coach Kristina Llanes' squad has welcomed to campus.
Following Saturday's opener, the Commodores will return home to Nashville for a four-game homestand. Vanderbilt's home opener is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m. CT against No. 3 North Carolina. That contest will be followed by home games against Canisius (Feb. 22), No. 2 Northwestern (Feb. 27) and Cincinnati (March 2). All Commodore home games will be played at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex, located on campus behind the McGugin Center on Jess Neely Drive.
