NASHVILLE -- The Vanderbilt women's lacrosse team braved chilly conditions to kick off the 2005 preseason Tuesday with the first practice of the spring semester.

Head Coach Cathy Swezey's Commodores, NCAA national semifinalists a year ago, welcome back 14 letterwinners from a team that also went 12-6 and won its second American Lacrosse Conference championship in three years.

The Dores are scheduled to open their 10th season as a varsity sport on Saturday, Feb. 26, as they travel to State College, Pa., for a crucial league match-up with the Nittany Lions of Penn State. Notre Dame will visit Nashville on March 9 for VU's home opener, with a 1 p.m. CT draw scheduled at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex behind the McGugin Center.

Twelve of the 15 teams on Vanderbilt's schedule earned top 20 rankings during the 2004 season, including four of six conference opponents.
