The Vanderbilt lacrosse team officially opened its 2013 preseason with a two-hour practice Monday on the Natchez Turf Field. Head Coach Cathy Swezey's squad will have three weeks to prepare for its first game--a February 3 road trip face Jacksonville.
The Commodores' home opener is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 10, when Kennesaw State visits the VU Lacrosse Complex for a 1 p.m. CT opening draw. That match will be KSU's first-ever as a varsity lacrosse program.
Vanderbilt brings a young squad into the 2013 season after nine seniors graduated from last year's team. The Commodores return only 25 percent of their goals scored a season ago, led by senior Carly Linthicum. Senior Courtney Kirk, who led Vanderbilt with 53 points in 2011 before redshirting last season, also returns.
Despite the turnover from last season, Swezey--entering her 16th season in Nashville--is excited about this group's prospects, thanks in part to the dedication the team showed during the offseason.
"While we're a young team, I think there's a lot to be excited about," the said. "We have a team that is extremely committed. I don't know if I've ever seen a team lift and run as hard as they did in our fall season. We are probably more fit than we have been in a lot of years. We've got a fully committed squad and I think good things are on the horizon."
