VU hosts Mason Rudolph Championships

The Vanderbilt golf teams will play host to the 11th annual Mason Rudolph Championships this Friday through Sunday at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.  The men will host the men's championship, the women the NCAA Fall Preview.

Men's Championship:  Vanderbilt head coach Tom Shaw and his 2011-12 team will host the Mason Rudolph Men's Championship on the Legends' Club South Course Friday through Sunday.

Course Layout:  The South Course will be set up as a par-71, 7,100-yard layout.

Teams:  Besides the host Commodores, Akron, Belmont, College of Charleston, Davidson, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Memphis, MTSU, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Samford, South Carolina, and Western Carolina will participate in this weekend's event.

Competing For Vanderbilt:  Lineup - Adam Hofmann, Trey DelGreco, Will Snipes, Hunter Stewart, Ryan Thornton; Individuals - Charlie Grace, Charile Ewing, Mills Rendell, Ben Fogler.

Play:  Eighteen holes will take place on Friday through Sunday, with fixed tee times on number one and 10 starting at 8 a.m. CT on Friday and Saturday and 7:30 a.m. CT Sunday.

Last Year's Results:  Memphis claimed last year's team championship with a 10-under par, 842 (274-284-284), two strokes better than second-place South Carolina.  The Tigers' Jack Belote won medalist honors with an eight-under par, 205 (66-69-70). 

Names From The Past:  Former Vanderbilt stars Luke List (2005) and Brandt Snedeker (2002) have each claimed the individual championship at the event.  List, Ryan Haselden (2009) and Jon Curran (2008) have placed runner-up at the event.  Vanderbilt claimed their lone Mason Rudolph championship in 2002, and finished runner-up in 2006 and 2004.

From Vanderbilt head coach Tom Shaw:  "We're excited to once again host the Mason Rudolph Championship.  We're a little heavy-hearted with this being the first tournament without Mason and Carol, but we're looking forward to a great weekend of collegiate golf.  
 
"As for our team, we hope to build on some momentum from the Carmel Cup earlier this month.  We've got some guys playing well, so we'll see how that translates into our first multi-team, traditional tournament setting of the season."

As is the custom for the team that is hosting the spring national championship, Vanderbilt and the North Course at the Legends Club will give the top 18 teams in the country a preview of the course at this year's Mason Rudolph Fall Preview.

The top 12 teams from the 2011 NCAA Championship are automatically invited, as are the teams that finish in the top ten of the final Golfstat rankings that did not make the top 12 at nationals.

Teams:  Joining Vanderbilt is Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, California, Duke, Florida, Georgia, LSU, North Carolina, Purdue, Southern California, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Tulane, UCLA, and Virginia.

Competing for Vanderbilt:  Lineup - Marina Alex, Lauren Stratton, Anna Leigh Keith, Kendall Martindale, Rene Sobolewski; Individuals - Irina Gabasa, Julia Thead, Gabrielle Balit.

Play:  Eighteen holes will take place on Friday through Sunday, with fixed tee times on number one and 10 starting at 8 a.m. CT on Friday and Saturday and 7:30 a.m. CT Sunday.

Last Year's Results:  LSU set a new championship record for a three-round total in 2010 after posting a 21-under par, 843.  The Tigers defeated then-defending national champion Purdue, who also broke the previous three-round scoring record, by two strokes.  Pia Halbig tied former Duke and current LPGA player Amanda Blumenherst (2007) with a three-round individual record of 12-under par, 203 (68-67-68) in route to the individual championship.  Halbig held off Michelle Shin of Wake Forest, who finished at 10-under par, 206.

Names From The Past:  Vanderbilt star Courtney Wood claimed the Commodores' lone individual championship at the Mason Rudolph Championship in 2002.  Current Vanderbilt standout Marina Alex finished runner-up in 2009, as did Jacqui Concolino in 2007 and Nicki Cutler in 2001.   The Commodores claimed the team title in 2002, and finished runner-up in the inaugural Mason Rudolph Women's Championship in 2001.

From Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen:  "We are excited to begin our journey to hosting the 2012 national championship with this year's Fall Preview.  The field is the best in women's collegiate golf, and it really gives golf fans in the Middle Tennessee area a chance to watch some of the future stars in golf.
