WG: Alex named first-team All-American

May 24, 2010

Commodore sophomore golfer Marina Alex was named as a first-team selection to the National Golf Coaches Association's All-American squad for her outstanding play during the 2009-10 campaign. Alex becomes only the third Vanderbilt women's golfer to be named to the first team, joining Jacqui Concolino in 2007 and May Wood in 2004 on the prestigious list.

Alex, who set an all-time Commodore best stroke average of 71.6, played in all 12 events for Vanderbilt this season, placed in the top 10 in all but one tournament, and won medalist honors at the SEC Championship in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Alex posted four top two finishes and two other top fives in her 2009-10 season, and finished the season in sixth place in the Golfstat Cup standings, an award given to the nation's top individual adjusted stroke average.

Recently, Alex and her teammates finished the NCAA Championship in seventh place, and set a new four-round stroke total of 1,170 for the tournament. The Commodores will return everyone from the team next season except senior Brooke Goodwin, who graduated with a degree in Economics and Human and Organizational Development, and sophomore Andrea Messer, who left the team to concentrate on her studies at Vanderbilt.
