Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.
Hard not to talk about our SEC champion women's golf team. The 11 team members had a cumulative 3.68 GPA last fall and came back this spring with a 3.61! Dean's List is 3.5.
Did you notice the news that seven of our athletic teams ranked in the Top 10 percentile for the NCAA's latest Academic Progress Rate (APR)? Those sports are men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, bowling, and indoor and outdoor women's track and field. We are among a group of less than 75 schools that have received Public Recognition Awards each of the nine years of the program. We are winning on and off the field.
Derek Mason made the time to get out to meet the 100-plus participants in our annual Vandy Golf Day fundraiser at the Golf Club of Tennessee. He didn't have time to play, but he was at the post-round awards presentation and was a hit with this far-flung group of Vanderbilt alumni and golf enthusiasts. It is typical of Derek's hustle to be at as many events as possible to meet Commodore Nation.
There is still wood to be chopped during the regular season and perhaps even the SEC Tournament but our administration has been making plans should we get to host a baseball regional and/or super regional. While the guys decide things on the diamond, we will be ready should we get the chance to host. If that happens, let's support our team with another capacity crowd and remember that not everyone can sit in the infield! We have 3,700 seats in "The Hawk" and about 2,000 are in the outfield.
Tennessean writer Jeff Lockridge had a tremendous feature on Jordan Matthews on NFL Draft Day Thursday. It's well worth reading; it will make you proud to be a Commodore.
