Vanderbilt freshman Marina Alex was named to the All-SEC Second Team and the All-SEC Freshman team for her accomplishments on the golf course this season, in an announcement made today by the SEC Office in Birmingham, Ala.
Alex led the team with a 74.4 stroke average and five top 20 finishes, and finished sixth in her first collegiate tournament, the Mason Rudolph Women's Championship. She played the number one position for the Commodores for most of the season, and her consistency was something Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen could count on throughout the year.
"Marina really gives this team a spark and I think we all knew she was in for a special kind of year after making birdie on four of her final five holes in our first qualifier in September," said Allen. "She has proven that she can give us low scores and be a great leader. Having a freshman make the All-SEC team shows this program has a bright future."
Auburn head coach Kim Evans was named SEC Coach of the Year, Tiger student-athlete Candace Schepperle was named Player of the Year, Kentucky's Mallory Blackwelder was the SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year, and Georgia's Marta Silva Zamora was tabbed the SEC Freshman of the Year.
