Bowling
Four 'Dores survive Junior Gold cut

July 14, 2010

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- The huge field of competitors at the Junior Gold Championship was trimmed Wednesday night to the top 78 bowlers and ties and the happy news for Vanderbilt fans is that the Commodores will have plenty of representation in Thursday's semi-finals.

Brittni Hamilton had another good day and was tentatively in second place before the evening set of bowlers had scores posted. Jessica Earnest made a strong run today and jumped up the board by rolling 1,328 (+128). Kim Carper was 17th out of the 350+ bowlers after two squads had finished and Sarah O'Brien was right behind in 19th place. Vanderbilt's only two casualties after the three-day cut were sophomores Lauren Rhein and Courtney Morgan.

A year ago, Vanderbilt representatives were everywhere with four making the final round of 16. Hamilton and Josie Earnest were in contention to win the tournament until the very last balls were rolled.

"It was a little tougher shot than we might have expected," Coach John Williamson said as the evening rounds were in motion. "Jess had a terrific day -- really all four of our kids that will make the cut did well. Kim and Sarah are competing hard and there's Brittni near the top of the leader board once again. It's going to be a very interesting couple of days."
