Back to the lanes: Vanderbilt's winter break is over and the Commodores head to Jonesboro, Ark., Thursday for Arkansas State's Mid-Winter Classic, which runs Friday through Sunday at the Jonesboro Bowling Center.
Tourney format: Friday starts with five, 5-game Baker matches beginning at 12:20. Saturday has five team games beginning at 9:40 and Sunday's championship bracket if three rounds of best-of-seven starting at 9:30.
Competing teams: Arkansas State, Bethune Cookman, Central Missouri, Elmhurst, McKendree, Louisiana Tech, Nebraska, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Tulane, UAB, Wisconsin-Whitewater, Valparaiso and Vanderbilt.
Travel squad: Nicole Mosesso, Natalie Goodman, Rebeca Reguero, Nicole Channin, Robyn Renslow, Amanda Fry, Tori Ferris, Nicole Powell, Giselle Poss.
Quick fall review: Vanderbilt is ranked eighth after an uneven fall season that saw the Commodores struggle at times but finish on a good note.
2014 Update: Five of Vandy's nine members on this week's travel unit were at the Team USA Trials last week in Vegas. Amanda Fry led the VU pack, placing eighth after the five marathon days of bowling. Her efforts earned her a spot on the Junior Team USA roster, joining teammate Natalie Goodman.
Recent History at Mid-Winter: The Commodores have fared well here the past three years. They won the tournament in 2011 and 2012 and last year got into the championship bracket before finishing fourth.
Quoting Coach John Williamson: "This is probably the one tournament when many teams might feel a bit out of kilter going in. We just got back from winter break last week and we had our alumni weekend to open our new facility so we have not spent lots of time working on things. But we also had a large number at the Trials in Las Vegas so they are coming off good competition. With all the good teams here it is going to be interesting."
