MILLSBORO, DE---Vanderbilt’s bowlers used steady scoring during a difficult afternoon to sit in second place after the first day of Maryland-Eastern Shore’s annual Hawk Classic.
The Commodores fashioned workman-like scores over 900 and cracked 1,000 once on a day when only a handful of other scores crossed into the 900’s. In the process, VU went 5-0 on the day although the primary factor was pin fall.
Vanderbilt trails Fairleigh Dickinson by 87 pins and is 274 pins ahead of New Jersey City, the third place team.
“We led early and I thought we had a generally good day,” Coach John Williamson said. “It was a long afternoon of bowling and in the last two rounds we moved some people around to gain experience and experiment on lineups so in the process we might have lost a bit of focus. But we wanted to do that and took advantage of the opportunity.”
Williamson said freshman Kim Carper had a particularly sharp day. While he didn’t have access yet to her strike percentage, he said it was very good and at one point the Minnesota product had thrown 15 strikes in 23 shots.
The Commodores have won this tournament three consecutive years. Play resumes Saturday at 9:00 a.m. with five team games and concludes Sunday with three rounds of best four-of-seven Baker play.
