READING, PA.---Vanderbilt crafted another good day on Heister Lanes, earning the No. 3 seed with its steady work and the right to meet fourth seeded Maryland-Eastern Shore in the first round of the title bracket at the Kutztown Invitational. Fairleigh Dickinson and Wisconsin-Whitewater meet in the other side of the bracket.
The Commodores continued their winning ways, knocking off five straight opponents to go 11-0 before ending the day appropriately enough against Fairleigh Dickinson, who also entered the match unbeaten. The Scarlet Knights were at the top of their game, starting with seven strikes in eight frames and going on to win, 1,102-995, the meet's second-best pin total.
"Overall we made some good shots but I didn't think we handled the success of our first day too well," said Coach John Williamson. "Perhaps it is just hard to duplicate the intensity of the first day but for whatever reason the day felt different."
Goodman, a junior who is a member of Junior Team USA, is having one of her best collegiate tournaments. On Friday she proved a strong anchor in Baker play and today the Illinois star was fourth in Vandy's rotation, churning out scores of 179-209-243-169-268-236 for a grand pin total of 1,304. That will put her fourth among the individual leaders when they are revealed Sunday.
"Natalie is one of the top college bowlers in the country," Williamson said, "and today she was very good at making consistent, quality first shots. She can be very explosive, she had that 1,300 with two fairly average games!"
Team momentum can sometimes be hard to bottle in this sport. The `Dores were firing on all cylinders in the second-to-last match of the day against Saint Francis (Pa). With Goodman's powerful 268 leading the way and getting strong help from Nicole Mosesso and Rebeca Reguero, Vanderbilt had its best total of the day in winning by 80 pins. Just minutes later they fell victim to FDU's strike barrage.
The tournament is being live-streamed by bowl.com. Action begins at 7:30 CST.
