HENDERSON, NV---Vanderbilt freshman Amanda Fry made a big move Friday at the Team USA Trials while all three bowlers with Commodore connections find themselves in the Top 15 after two rounds of competition.
Fry, who enjoyed a strong varsity fall campaign, had the seventh best day (212.50) and is in 11th place overall with 2,476 pins. She trails her assistant coach and former NCAA Player of the Year Josie Earnest, who is 10th with 2,507 pins while Brittni Hamilton, a 2012 Vanderbilt graduate, is 15th with 2,434 pins. Danielle McEwan leads the 85 women in this elite event with 2,583 pins over two days of bowling.
Fry is battling to earn a spot on the Junior Team USA and should she make it, she would be the third active Vanderbilt varsity student-athlete on the squad, joining teammates Robyn Renslow and Natalie Goodman, who earned their places at last summer's Junior Gold. Vanderbilt senior Jessica Earnest has also been a Junior Team USA competitor but has now exceeded the age limit for that team.
The top three men and top three women after five rounds of qualifying will be guaranteed spots on Team USA in 2013 and will bowl in the stepladder finals for the right to be declared champion, a spot in the QubicaAMF World Cup and prize money. Two more men and two more women from the event will be selected to join Team USA, while five men and five women will be selected from a pool of eligible bowlers based on their bowling resumes and Trials performance, if they competed.
A total of eight Junior Team USA spots - four boys and four girls - also will be available. The top two boys and top two girls in the final points standings will earn automatic spots, while two boys' and two girls' spots will be at-large selections taken from either the Team USA Trials field or the finals field from the North Pointe Junior Gold Championships held in July 2012. All bowlers 20 and under as of Jan. 1, 2013 are eligible for Junior Team USA.
