BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Vanderbilt women's basketball team has been selected to finish fifth in the Southeastern Conference by an annual poll of SEC and national media members. The media selected Tennessee to win the league championship.
The Commodores were also represented in the Preseason All-SEC teams, as redshirt sophomore Stephanie Holzer was named to the second team. Holzer won SEC Sixth Woman of the Year a season ago while also being named Honorable Mention All-SEC. The forward averaged 11.1 points and 6.0 rebounds per game during her rookie campaign.
The Lady Vols were followed by Georgia, Kentucky and LSU to round-out the top four. Following the Commodores are Florida, Arkansas, South Carolina, Auburn, Alabama, Mississippi State and Ole Miss.
Tennessee's Shekinna Stricklen was named Preseason Player of the Year by the media. Glory Johnson (Tennesse), LaSondra Barrett (LSU) and Jasmine James (Georgia) also received Player of the Year votes. All four made the preseason first team, with Kentuky's A'dia Mathies rounding out the quintet.
Holzer was joined on the second team by C'eria Ricketts (Arkansas), Sarah Watkins (Arkansas), Valencia McFarland (Ole Miss) and Meighan Simmons (Tennessee).
The annual media poll is released in anticipation of SEC Basketball Media Day on October 27. The coaches poll will be released on Tuesday, November 8.
The Commodores open up the 2011-12 season with an exhibition game against Clayton State on Saturday, November 5. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Gym. The regular season gets underway on Friday, November 11, when Vanderbilt hosts Alabama A&M.
